Fixed or adjustable dumbbells?

Fixed pairs are ready to grab. Adjustables save space. The better choice depends on how you train and how much room you want to give them.

Fixed dumbbells: grab the next pair

There’s a lot to like about picking up the next weight without adjusting anything. Fixed dumbbells are convenient for quick changes and when two people train together. The catch is that every pair needs somewhere to live.

Include the storage rack in your plan and budget. The dumbbells need to sit properly on its supports, with room for you to lift them out comfortably. A growing collection across the floor soon eats into the space you meant to train in.

Adjustables: more weights in less space

I moved to REP Pepin adjustable dumbbells when I changed to the Ares 2.0 setup. Compacting the gym left me more room for floor work and to move around the punchbag. That’s the appeal of adjustables: several weights in one place.

Compare the minimum, maximum and increments, then look at how you change weight and confirm it’s locked. Some dumbbells stay the same length at lighter settings; others shorten. Read the handling rules, particularly any restriction on dropping them. Find out whether a stand is included and whether heavier upgrades are actually supported for that model.

Think through a whole workout

List the weights you use for your main exercises. Does the set cover them, and are the steps between settings sensible for you? A huge maximum isn’t much help if the lighter jumps are too large.

Consider how often you change weight, whether anyone else trains with you and where the dumbbells go between sets. If you can, try the handles and adjustment. Finally, confirm what the price buys: one dumbbell, a pair, a stand or the whole bundle.
