Choosing a weight bench

You’ll spend plenty of time on it, and probably move it more than you expect. Choose around your exercises and the space inside your rack.

Which positions will you actually use?

If all your bench work is flat, a flat bench may do everything you need. An adjustable bench gives you more positions, but look at the actual angles. “Adjustable” doesn’t necessarily mean decline, and the seat settings matter alongside the backrest.

If you want a leg developer or preacher pad later, look for documented support for that exact bench and generation. Bench attachments don’t have a universal mounting system. A familiar-looking socket isn’t enough to go on.

Make sure it fits you and the rack

Compare pad height, width and length. With an adjustable bench, look at the pad gap and how you change positions. Photos help, but measurements and a chance to try it will tell you more than a nice colour scheme.

The frame underneath is easy to overlook. A rear foot or wheel can hit a rack crossmember before the pad reaches where you need it. Allow for both flat and incline work on your layout, particularly if a cable system or footplate takes up space at the back.

Could you live with moving it every session?

A heavy bench may look reassuringly substantial, but you still have to move it. If it’ll be in and out of the rack regularly, pay attention to its weight, handle and wheels. Only store it upright if it’s designed for that.

Read how the manufacturer defines the load rating. It may include your body weight as well as the weights you’re lifting, and limits can differ between positions or attachments. The weight of the bench itself is a separate measurement. A useful shortlist comes down to fit, the positions you need and how easy it is to use.
